The Large And The Small Of It

Yesterday we spent the day in the Lake Tahoe area. yes there is still lots of snow. it is the strangest thing we pull off the road to take pics of the views; on one side there is snow on the mountains, and a beautiful lake below, ski hills filled to the brim with skiers, hills alive with tobogganers, a golf course for those who are so inclined and when we reached the lake below there were children and adults playing on the sandy beach. Huge snow banks on the roads down the mountains and the views around every turn were stunning.

BUT today... Oh my! I won't even pretend to tell you these photos captured what we saw on our way in and through Yosemite National Park...this is the large and small of some of what we saw today. Enjoy!

This is a tree called Red Bud. It produces no fruit..these flowers turn to green leaves later in the season, but for now they are quite a spectacle all along the mountain roads.

Orange Indian Paintbrush

The Western Jay or Scrub Jay or often called the Stellar Jay. A little darker than our blue jays at home.

These guys were as interested in us as we were of them, and I had time shoot several pics but this one struck me funny. It seemed one was keeping watch one direction and the other the opposite direction.

This was some of the small of things and now for the large...hang on to your hat. It is amazing!

This was a HUGE rock slide that totally wiped out a very large part of the highway, causing us to be re-routed across the river. A little un-nerving to say the least. I found myself watching all the rocks along the side of the road...

After awhile the views won out though and I thought less of the falling rock and more of the huge standing ones.

No words.....

We spent time at the visitors centre and watched a native woman demonstrate several skills. There were many native artifacts including this beaded buckskin dress.
Again, the trees were huge...many of them were sequoias.

Standing in the roots of a fallen monarch.

I just had to show you another shot of El Capitan...a huge, shear granite rock face, that was once considered "unclimbable" but of course that changed in the late '50s. Better them than me, I say.

We spent a full day in Yosemite and barely scratched the surface of all there was to see and do.
The last leg of the trip on our way to Fresno I looked back from where we had travelled and there was a lovely full moon over the mountains...sigh....

I leave you with a little true story...a man pulled up to the rangers gate at the entrance to Yosemite National Park. He told the ranger he had just one hour to spend in the park, and asked what would be the best plan of action. The ranger pointed to a rock, and told the man if I were you I would just to go over there and sit and cry.

THE WAY I SEE IT

Nothing too exciting today...a travel day, but pretty scenery just the same. We were more concerned with the destination than photo stops, so most of the photos were taken on the fly...through the side window, through the spotty, water streaked, star chipped windshield and even in the outside mirrors on the door. Today you see it, the way I saw it.

We arrived safe and sound to our hotel for this evening.

For the most part while travelling we have been stopping at the Holiday Inn. That blue and green sign with the big "H" means Home at the end of the day. Tonight, it just happens to be in Reno, Nevada... Don't worry though...I know Reno used to be known for quickie divorces, but all is well with Mr. O and I.
Reno is just a stop over on our way to Lake Tahoe.

Along the drive, today I was noticing some of the warning signs along the hi-way and it got me to remembering all the "different warnings" we have seen along the way. Here are a few

Goodness! It's amazing we have arrived unscathed!

Hexagon update:
I got several more done last night and a few more today in the car. My little box of desert jewels is slowly filling up.

We're Back!

In California that is...we are travelling down through the Eastern side of California and hoping to visit a few of the National Parks. It was a beautiful drive today...sun was shining and driving through parts of Oregon was absolutely magical. It is all a result of the rain forest conditions along the Oregon coast, and I am not sure what the locals call it, but it looked like an Emerald Forest to me.

Isn't it magical looking with the sun shining through. The trees are totally covered in moss and if I was a writer of fantasy books this would certainly inspire me...can't you just imagine wood nymphs and faeries, or trolls hiding behind one of those moss covered stumps or sitting in the crook of a limb on one of those trees, and peeking down on me snapping a photo or two?
They look so soft and velvety in real life...makes you want to almost pet them, like you would a favourite teddy bear...and no I didn't!
Mr. O shakes his head at enough things I do, if I asked him to pull over for me to "feel/pet" a tree he might just cut the trip short to have my state of mind evaluated.

Before long we were catching glimpses of the mountains ahead of us.

I'm sure we will see a little more of the "white stuff" tomorrow as we trek over and through the mountains on out way to Tahoe. Some of the climbs up these mountain hi-ways can be very exhilarating even in a car...twists and turns, steep climbs, manoeuvring around cyclists, and still trying to enjoy the view.

We are resting our bones in Yreka, California tonight. It is nice to stop early enough to put my feet up transfer photos from my camera onto my IPad, and be able to write my blog post, with a little time left over to read or stitch a bit. Hope you are enjoying a cozy evening with maybe a bit of stitching or reading or whatever it is you do to relax.

Bet you can't guess what I did today...

Easy to start to the day...a wonderful breakfast buffet; a little reading...a walk along the Historic Oregon Trail...

In case you're wondering, yes I got my feet wet...the water was moving pretty swiftly and it took strategic foot placement and balance on the rocks...something I apparently am not very good at. Oh well, it was a nice sunny day..very spring like. A reinforcement that spring has sprung was evident along the path...

Pussy willows and puddles. What says spring any better than that?
A little visit to the spa to pick out some hair products, a stop in the lobby for a coffee and fresh apple walnut crumble muffins and back to the room for some reading time. I finished the book I was reading, glanced through a quilt magazine, AND.... Are you ready for this?

-------------------------

I sewed today! A while back, in a Tucson quilt shop stop, I picked up 3 small packages of hexagon pre cuts and the appropriate sized paper templates. There were three fabric choices...spring brights, Kaffe Fassett bold prints, or batiks. I chose the batiks because they sort of reminded me of desert colours and textures. There were 25 in each pkg. and I bought 3 pkg. I thought 75 hexagons would be just enough to get my feet wet. I had never done them before and wasn't ready to start a queen sized quilt. I figure I have enough to make a candle mat...a little souvenir of my 2 weeks in the Arizona desert.
I have 26 done and it really is not as tedious as I expected. I think having everything pre cut made the difference.

Tomorrow we pack up and hit the road again. Mr. O. says the weather is still to crazy north of the border, so we will be heading south again...this time along the interior of Oregon and California...through some of the National Parks...down to Death Valley, back through Nevada and on to Utah. I know it is officially spring in Canada but we have been following the weather network and it does not look very springlike yet,so we will kill a little more time down here where it is warmer before heading north.
Mr O. is looking forward to seeing General Sherman(more on that later) and I am anxious for Arches National Park in Utah...but we will enjoy the journey until then.
